Where is Telluride?Located on the scenic San Juan Skyway in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village are 67 miles south of Montrose, 125 miles northwest of Durango and 127 miles south of Grand Junction. For our long distance travelers, Telluride is located 6 hours from Albuquerque, N.M., 7 hours from Denver, CO., and 9 hours from Phoenix, AZ. Click to go to maps What is Telluride like?Telluride is a National Historic Landmark District with Victorian-era architecture. Resting at the base of the Telluride Ski area, Telluride is surrounded by 10,000 to 14,000 foot peaks. Roughly 10 by 5 blocks, this pedestrian-friendly town makes having a car unnecessary. Other methods of transportation include the Galloping Goose, shuttle rides and the free gondola that connects Telluride and Mountain Village from 7am–midnight daily.
What about Mountain Village?Mountain Village is connected to Telluride by the free gondola. Located 9,500 feet above sea level, the year-round alpine resort was incorporated in 1995 and hosts a championship golf course, mountain biking, and auxurious spa. Mountain Village is a thriving mountain community that offers a variety of fine amenties that include a world class conference center, lodging, dining, shopping and a variety of year round activities.
Who rides the Gondola?The gondola is free to pedestrians who want to travel between Telluride and Mountain Village. Mountain bikers and hikers can also ride the gondola to access the ski area trails. There are handicap accessible cars as well as cabins designated for pets. The only transportation system of its kind in North America, the ride between the two towns requires only 13 minutes.
What is the weather like?Telluride's unique location provides some of the nicest weather in North America. Telluride is bordered on the south and west by dessert and by the alpine mountains on the north and east. Telluride boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year, and if it not snowing or sprinkling Telluride is a pure sunshine delight. Winters are mild in comparision to other resort rivals to the the north. Summers are an alpine delight with confortable days and cool nights. Average humidiy in Telluride is 10%, this is natures air conditioning. A paradise! What is it like at altitude?At 8,750 feet in Telluride and 9,500 feet in Mountain Village, the air pressure is 40% lower than at sea level. Tips for travelers:
Is there a medical facility in Telluride?The Telluride Medical Center is a full-service, 24-hour medical facility with emergency ambulance and helicopter service to neighboring hospitals. A certified Level V Trauma Center, the medical center is the first stand-alone clinic not associated with a hospital to receive this designation in the state of Colorado.
Will my dog like Telluride?Of course downs are welcome in town. However, dogs in Telluride and Mountain Village are required to be on a leash at all times. Here are the rules for dog owners: Pick-up bags and trash containers are provided for disposal of pet waste. The park near the base of the gondola in the town of Telluride is a great place to meet and play with local dogs. Check the lodging section of the website for accommodations that welcome pets.
Where is Bridal Veil Falls?At 365 feet, Bridal Veil Falls is Colorado's longest free-falling waterfall. Located at the east end of Telluride, it is a quick 2-mile drive down Colorado Avenue toward the back of the valley above the Pandora Mill site. If you don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, park here. From the mill you can see the waterfall but we recommend walking farther up the dirt road to the base of the falls. |
